Installing Firefox browser on Linux

Getting Firefox browser installed on your machine is the first step towards using it. It is very easy to install Firefox browser on Linux operating system. Many Linux distributions have included Firefox browser by default. There are some distributions that have included IceWeasal which is nothing but a version of Firefox browser with Firefox trademarks removed.

Most Linux distributors now have included a package management system which allows you to easily install Firefox browser. Generally it should be installed from package management. The advantages of installing from package management are as follows:

1. It ensures that you have the required libraries

2. It installs Firefox in such a way that it operates best with your computer

3. It creates shortcuts in order to launch Firefox.

4. It makes Firefox browser available to all the users of your machine

Installing from package manager (Fedora 8, CentOS 5.1

1] Click on Applications menu and then select Add/Remove software

2] You will be asked about your root password. Enter the password and then click on OK button

3] Click on search tab

4] In search bar, you have to type Firefox

5] Locate entry for Firefox and then select its checkbox

6] Press the Apply button that is located at lower right corner.

If you have done the above steps correctly, you should be able to now open the Firefox browser by opening Applications menu, clicking Internet and then choosing Firefox

Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.04

1. Click on Applications menu and then select Add/Remove

2. In search box that is at the top of dialog you need to type Firefox

3. Select checkbox that is next to the Firefox web browser

4. Click on Apply changes

5. In confirmation dialog box that will appear, click on Apply

6. Ubuntu asks for your password. Enter your password and then press OK

7. In the dialog box” Software has successfully installed”, press close.

If you have executed the above steps properly then you will have no problem in opening Firefox. This is done by opening Applications menu, clicking internet and then selecting Firefox web browser

Installing Firefox browser outside of package manager: Complete instructions to install Firefox browser outside of the package management are available at the distribution's support website. Before you install the browser, ensure that your machine has required libraries installed. If your computer does not have these libraries then even if you install the browser, it won't operate. If your system doesn't meet those requirements then you must install latest update to Firefox 2

The following instructions given below will help you to install Firefox browser into the home directory.

1. Download Firefox browser from Firefox download page into your home directory.

2. Open the terminal and then extract contents of downloaded file.

3. If Firefox is open, close it.

4. To start Firefox, you have to run Firefox script in Firefox folder.

Firefox should start. On your desktop, you can create an icon to run the Firefox script.

Libstdc++5 error: As stated above, you have to install required libraries for the browser to work. By default, many distributions do not include libstdc++5.

In some cases, it is found that when users start Firefox browser, they get the message “Firefox not installed” or the wrong version of the browser starts. This is because you have started Firefox with an incorrect command. It should be noted that you should always start your Firefox browser with the command ~/firefox/firefox

If you have launched your Firefox browser with the command 'Firefox' then it will tell that the program isn't installed or else it will start package manager installed version of Firefox.
