How to set Firefox as default browser
Whenever you click on any URL in your mail application such as Outlook or Thunderbird or a link on any website then it is opened automatically in your default browser. There are a number of ways that can be used to make Firefox as your default browser. However, note that there are some applications that have been created to open only with Internet explorer, no matter what browser you have to set as your default browser. All these methods to make Firefox as your default browser are simple and hardly take any time.
Using your OS: Perform the following steps given below to make Firefox as your system default browser using the operating system:
Windows Vista:
1] Click on start button and then choose Default Programs item
2] You have to then click on set program access and computer defaults item
3] In access and defaults window, you need to click on custom radio button in order to expand Custom category
4] Underneath the choose a default Web browser, you need to click on radio button that is next to the Mozilla Firefox
5] Click on OK button that is at the bottom of window.
Windows XP
1] Click on start button and then click on control panel icon in order to open Windows control panel
2] Click on Add or remove programs icon and Add or remove programs applet will open.
3] On the left hand side of Window, you have to click Set Program Access and defaults icon.
4] In access and defaults window, you need to click on custom radio button in order to expand Custom category.
5] Underneath the choose a default Web browser, you need to click on radio button that is next to the Mozilla Firefox.
6] Click on OK button that is at the bottom of window.
Manually setting File Types: If links from software programs like Outlook do not open in Firefox then you should manually set file handling options
1] You need to open Windows Explorer
2] In menu bar you have to click on Tools>Folder options
3] Click on File types tab
4] Find the URL:Hyper text Transfer Protocol. You have to then click on it and choose the advanced button.
5] Click on open action and then choose the edit option
6] You have to fill in fields with information mentioned below:
Action: open
Application that is used to perform the action:"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -requestPending -osint -url "%1". (Make sure that you have installed Firefox to its default location)

Topic: WWW_OpenURL
DDE Message: ”%1”,,0,0,,,,
Repeat the steps 5 and 6 for URL:Hyper Text Transfer Protocol with Privacy option.
Troublesome programs: These are indeed troublesome programs as they open only with Internet Explorer. They are coded to open with IE. Here is a list of programs that open with Internet explorer and show error message if you try to open with Firefox browser MSN messenger.

Setting Firefox as system default browser from Firefox options panel:
Perform the steps given below:
1] Launch your Firefox browser
2] At the top of Firefox window, you have to click on Tools menu and then choose Options
3] If it is not selected already, you have to select main panel, then click 'check now' option.
4] Select the Yes button to set Firefox as the default browser. If you no longer want Firefox as the default browser then you have to select another browser as the default browser.
