Ways to uninstall add-ons

Normally you can uninstall extensions such as plug-in and add-ons using Firefox Add-ons window. But in some cases it is found that extensions cannot be uninstalled by simply using Firefox add-ons window.

Uninstall add-ons from safe mode

If you are not able to access Add-ons window or if you see that uninstall button has been grayed out then you should uninstall it from safe mode.

1] Close down Firefox window completely. For doing this, you have to click on file menu that is at the top of Firefox window. From the file menu, select the exit button.

2] If you are using Windows operating system then do the following: Click on start button, open 'All programs' list and then navigate to Mozilla Firefox folder. In Mozilla Firefox folder, you have to select the Mozilla Firefox (Safe mode).

3] Firefox then should open up in safe mode.

Note that you can open Firefox browser in safe mode by simply clicking the start button and then selecting the run option. You have to enter the following text in text field given below:

When Firefox is working in safe mode; you will find that you can now uninstall certain add-ons by performing some simple steps.

Uninstalling Add-ons with the help of Windows Add/Remove programs: There are some extensions that make use of Windows installer, hence they can be uninstalled through Windows remove or add programs menu.

1] Exit Firefox window. From the menu that is at the top of Firefox window, you have to select File option and then choose exit menu item

2] From start menu that is in Windows taskbar, you have to select 'Control window'. Control panel window will open.

3] Now you have to open Windows program listing

For Windows Vista, you have to click on 'uninstall a program: If you have installed Windows 2000, you have to double click on Add or remove programs.

4] From the list of programs that are currently installed, select the extension that you wish to uninstall.

5] In order to start the uninstall

For Windows Vista, you have to click on uninstall button.

For Windows 2000/XP, you have to click on remove button.

6] You have to simply follow on-screen instructions in order to delete the extension.

Uninstalling manually: You can easily uninstall the extension you want manually. In case you are not able to uninstall the extension in safe mode then there is no need to worry as you can uninstall it manually. The steps given below will tell you how to manually uninstall the extension.

1] Opens Firefox profiles folder

2] If the profiles folder has multiple folders then you should open the folder for active profile

3] Open extensions folder that is contained in your profile folder.

4] Here each folder corresponds to a extension. The names of these folders are often obscured. For each and every folder:

Make use of text editor such as Notepad for opening install.rdf file. Use Find tool of text editor for searching the following text: em:name.

If name on that line does correspond to an extension you want to remove then delete whole folder.

Globally installed extensions: In some rare cases, extensions and plug-ins are installed globally. So if you want to delete globally installed extension then do the following:

1] Go to Firefox installation folder

2] Go to extensions folder that is inside installation folder.

3] Follow steps given above in order to locate appropriate folder to remove.
