How to recover Bookmarks in Firefox

During usage of Firefox, all of a sudden you may discover that your browser has lost your bookmarks. However in most cases, bookmarks aren't lost. Even if your bookmark is lost it can be recovered easily. Here are some of the ways that can be used for recovering them

Unable to locate your bookmarks after they are imported from another browser: If you have indeed imported bookmarks then they will appear in Bookmarks menu in a particular folder. To locate your imported bookmarks, perform the following:

1] At the top of Firefox window, choose the bookmarks menu. On clicking bookmarks menu, a list of bookmarks will appear.

2] Depending on the type of browser, from where you have imported your bookmarks, they will appear in specially named folder in Bookmarks list.

3] If the bookmarks were stored in a particular pattern, the folder structure will be preserved inside this specially named folder

4] The imported bookmarks can be moved to other folders.

Default set of bookmarks are always displayed in Bookmarks folder: Your bookmarks are always associated with that profile you are using. Most Firefox users use the default profile. When Firefox creates a new profile for you, it shows default set of bookmarks that are contained in it. Your personal bookmarks may not be in this new profile but that doesn't mean you have lost them. Your bookmarks can be easily recovered. The troubleshooting sequence given below will help you to determine if Firefox browser has indeed created a new profile.

1] Access your Firefox profile folder

2] Move up to \Profiles\ folder

3] A window will display all your profiles that have been created.

Each profile folder has been named something like xxxxxx where xxxxxxxx is a set of numerals or random letters. corresponds to name of profile. For instance the folder that contains default profile is always xxxxxxxx.default

4] If Profile folder is containing only 1 folder then go to next set of steps

5] If this location has multiple folders that means there are multiple profiles. More than 1 profile folder clearly indicates that Firefox browser has created a new profile. In this case, Firefox should be instructed to make use of profile.

Modifying your current profile.

1] From the menu, located at the top of Firefox window, you have to choose File and then select exit menu item

2] Now reboot your computer

3] When your machine restarts then choose start menu in Windows Taskbar. Now select Run.

4] Enter the following in run dialog: firefox.exe-profile manager

5] Click on OK button. 'Choose user profile' dialog box will appear.

6] If multiple profiles are listed in dialog then you must choose your standard profile that has your saved bookmarks. This profile in most cases is named as Default. Select it.

7] Click on start Firefox.

8] Firefox browser restarts with the profile that you have selected and your bookmarks will be available in Bookmarks menu.

Restoring Bookmark backups: If Firefox browser is closed due to an unexpected event such as loss of power or due to crash, the file that contains all your bookmarks may become corrupted and they may be not available in Firefox. If the bookmarks have been lost within last 5 days, then your bookmarks can be restored from the backup that your browser maintains. So even if you loose your bookmarks because your file has become corrupted, there is no need to worry. The set of backups maintained by Firefox will allow you to recover your bookmarks.
