Using plugins with Firefox

Real Player plugin allows to play video or playback content through Firefox browser. Video content of some websites cannot be viewed without RealPlayer plugin

Installing Real Player

1] If you haven't downloaded Real Player, then download it from its official website

2] Close Firefox window

3] Run set up program

4] When installation process is complete, you will have to open Firefox

5] In Firefox location bar, you need to type about:plugins and then press Enter. The list of plugins that are installed is displayed

6] The Real Player plugin is listed as Real Player(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32 bit)

Troubleshooting Real Player plugin

Control buttons vanish: If control buttons of Real Player vanish, you should upgrade installation of Real Player to latest version.

Using Shockwave plugin with Firefox: With Shockwave plugin, you can play Shockwave movies in Firefox. You can thus play animated content that include online training, interactive demos and games.

Installing Shockwave: For installing Shockwave plugin, do the following:

1] Go to www.adobe.com

2] Click on 'Download Now' button. Download dialog box will appear.

3] Click on 'Save file' button for saving the file. You will see download progress bar

4] When you download the file, click on 'Open' button in Download manager

Uninstalling Shockwave

1] In Windows Task bar, you will have to click on Start Menu. Click on Control panel.

2] In Control Panel list, choose Add or Remove programs. Add or remove program will appear

3] For removing Shockwave, click on 'Change/Remove' button.

4] The Shockwave player plugin will be uninstalled.

Firefox may consume lot of memory after you install Shockwave as this plugin uses upto 100 megabytes in a short time. If your RAM size is less then you should think of uninstalling Shockwave

Using Java plugin with Firefox browser: Today many web pages make use of Java applets in order to make the content more interactive that include online games. Before Firefox browser can run the Java applets, it is necessary to have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) properly enabled and installed. You should know how to update or install your JRE and make it work in Firefox

Testing Java: There are many online tools that can tell if Java is indeed enabled and installed in Firefox. You need to visit Java test page that is at java.com. Through above test, it is also possible to install appropriate JRE for the system.

Enabling Java: If Java isn't working, ensure that “Enable Java” is chosen in Firefox preferences

1] Open Firefox window

2] At the top of Firefox window, you have to click on Edit menu and then choose Preference

3] Select Content panel

4] Ensure that Enable Java is chosen

Other software that can block Java: Even if you have installed and enabled Java in Firefox, it still may not work if it is blocked by Firefox add-ons or other software such as Firefox browser's Adblock extension can stop working of Java if OBJ-TABS have been enabled

Using QuickTime plugin with Firefox: If you want to play different types of movies through Firefox browser then you must install QuickTime plugin.

Checking for Quicktime: While this plugin is not installed automatically when you install the browser (Firefox), it might be installed already on your system in case you are using Mac.

Installing Quicktime: This plugin is not available for Linux system; however Mplayer is a well known Linux media player which can play Quicktime media.

Adobe Reader: If you are unable to download and review any PDF files with Firefox then you must install Adobe Reader plugin. This plugin is a free program that will allow your Firefox to review and print PDF documents.
