The complacency of the web browsers was shattered by the aggressive approach of the Firefox web browser.

There are many factors that led to the rapid rise of the popularity of the Firefox web browsing software application. One very important factor was the fact that the competitors of the Firefox web browsing software application were very complacent about the release of the Firefox web browsing software application and the potential of the Firefox web browsing software application to become a serious competitor.

There is no doubt that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer tops the list of the complacent competitor. However, the truth is that all other web browsing software applications had also become complacent about the web browser market. People had become used to mediocrity and no web browsing software application seemed to possess the vision or the courage to stand up and set new standards. Despite providing mediocre service, the market share of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer remained significantly high merely because there was no viable alternative available. Of course, even today a large number of end users of the Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browsing software application have absolutely no choice in the matter. Today, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is bundled with the Windows operating system and the end users of the Windows operating system became end users of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as well. Further, the number of corporate and institutional users of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is significantly high. While individual end users of web browsing software applications are bold enough to make the switch to Mozilla Firefox, corporate and institutional end users are very hesitant about switching over from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer despite the presence of a superior web browser in the form of Mozilla Firefox.

The support of the corporate and institutional end users and the ignorance and lack of awareness of the average end user led to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer becoming very complacent about its dominance of the web browser market. In such a scenario, it was very easy for the Firefox web browsing software application to take advantage of the rumbling disapproval about the service offered by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as a web browsing software application. The tabbed browsing feature in the Firefox web browser was sufficient to convince the end users that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was never one to raise the bar. The fact that a new entrant into the web browsing market was offering this revolutionary feature which would change the way the world surfed the web was considered proof of failure of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to pay attention to the needs of the end users.

The fact that the Firefox web browsing software application offered so many revolutionary features in one go and that the first version of the web browsing software application was far better than the sixth version of Internet Explorer went a long way in convincing the users that no amount of understanding and sympathy was not going to work with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Mass defections began to take place and when millions and millions of end users began to switch over to Mozilla Firefox, that is when other web browsers woke up to the changing market and began to incorporate the changes that were so long overdue. It is very significant that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer version 7.0 offers the tabbed browsing feature. Within a few years after the Firefox web browsing software application offered the tabbed browsing feature, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer offered the same. The question remains why Microsoft’s Internet Explorer did not offer the feature earlier. The complacent nature of the competitors enabled the Firefox web browsing software application to earn brownie points by putting itself as a highly active and aggressive web browsing software application that is constantly on the move to improve itself and to make the web browsing experience of the end users better.
