Preferences in Firefox

Main preferences

Startup: When you open the browser, by default the home page will be displayed. Your home page may be a search engine, your email account, or perhaps a frequently visited website. If you want, you can modify your home page or select a different page or a set of pages to display on start up.

When Firefox starts: When Firefox starts by default, it will open your home page (that is listed in text box immediately below) that corresponds to 'Show my home page option. An alternate way is to select a blank page to display on start up by selecting 'Show a blank'

If you want Firefox to reopen the tabs and windows you had opened the last time you had used Firefox then you should select' Show my windows and tabs from last time'.

Home page: If you have set Firefox browser to display your home page then you should specify the home page by entering it here. So if you want to select a special home page, click any one of the buttons that are below the textbox

Use Current Page: This will set the currently displayed pages or (multiple pages, if you have opened multiple tabs) as your home page

Use Bookmarks: This will set the selected bookmark as your home page.

Restore to Default: This will reset your home page to default home page.

Downloads: This section gives details about the preferences that determines how Firefox browser downloads files

Show Downloads window when downloading any file: If this preference is selected then Firefox opens Downloads window when users start downloading any file

Close download window when all the downloads are finished: You can select this preference if you want Firefox browser to close the downloads window when all the downloads that are currently in progress complete.

Saves files to: By default, the downloaded files are saved automatically to the desktop. Thus, you don't have to specify the download location for each and every file you download. If you wish, you can also select a different folder by simply clicking 'Browse button'.

Always ask me where to save the files: If you use this preference, Firefox browser will ask you every time about the location of the downloaded file to be stored. Thus, Firefox will allow you save downloaded files on a location other than the specified default location.

System Defaults: Always check to see if Firefox browser is default browser on start up: If you select this option, it will verify whether it is default browser at the start up. This ensures that Firefox browser is used whenever any application tries to open a web page. You can click 'check now button, if you want to perform a check right now.

Tab preferences: New pages must be opened in: This preference will control whether links from web pages or other application that request to open them in all new windows, are opened in new tab or new window in most recent window. If you have selected to open web pages in the new tabs then Firefox ignores this preference and opens new window from a link if page author has specified that new window must have specific size.

Warn me when you are closing multiple tabs: When you are closing a window using multiple tabs, Firefox browser will always ask you in order to confirm your choice. This will prevent you from closing whole window when you want to close only the current tab. You have to uncheck the preference. This action will disable the warning and Firefox will close the window automatically.
