In the initial period, more and more people are curious to know about the software application. Hence, they will go ahead and download the setup file even if they are not very sure whether they need the software application. In the initial stage, more and more people want to check out the software application. It is not to use it but to know more about it. Since so many people are curious to know about the application, the number of downloads in the initial stages are very high
As time passes, the number of downloads falls. Not only does the initial hype surrounding the software application fade away, more and more people start distributing the software application and people who would have downloaded the software from the Internet try to get a copy of the setup file from their friends or other contacts. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that once the initial stage passes, the number of downloads comes down.

Twenty five million copies were downloaded in the first ninety nine days. Seventy five million copies were downloaded in the next two hundred and forty five days only. Once the initial few month passes, people would not download the setup file from the Internet. They try to obtain a copy from their friends or contacts. Considering all this, you can imagine the actual number of people who were using Mozilla Firefox web browsing software application as their default web browser after the end of the first year!!
