Installing Firefox Add-ons

If you’re unable to install a Firefox add-on then this may be due to the following reasons given below:

Add-on isn't compatible: Each add-on has an internal file that indicates with which version the add-on is compatible. In Firefox Add-ons area, you can review the version compatibility information on that page for each extension available.

If the Firefox version that you have installed is not mentioned in the internal file then installing this add-on will give you an error which indicates that it is not compatible. So if your Firefox version is incompatible with this add-on then do the following:

1. Upgrade to latest Firefox version

2. Find that version of add-on which is compatible with your Firefox version. The Firefox Add-ons site has the latest version of every add-on

3. The best way to overcome this problem is to use a different add-on. For many add-ons, there are similar add-ons that provide same functionality.

Software installation disabled: Installation of software can also be disabled through Firefox. You can check whether software is disabled

1] In Location bar, enter about:config and then press enter

2] In Filter text box, type xpinstall.enabled.

3] xpinstall.enabled value should be true. In case if this value is set to false then installation of software is disabled.

4] If you want to this value to true, you have to right click property name and then choose reset

5] Try reinstalling the extension

Firefox prevented the website from installing the software: By default, Firefox browser will allow you to install extensions only from trusted sites. If the site that you will be using to install add-on isn't in the trusted sites list then a yellow bar will appear across top of web page along with a message that is similar to following:

Firefox has prevented the site from asking you to install the software on your machine

So if you add this site to trusted sites list

1] In yellow bar, you have to click on Edit preferences

2] In allowed websites-Add-ons Installation dialog box, a list of sites that are permitted is displayed. The URL of current site is inserted into text field

3] To permit the website, you have to click on 'Allow' button. Then click on close button. You can change the above settings through security panel in Firefox options

You will be asked to download add-ons, instead of installing it:

Some websites will allow users to download add-ons from their website. All you have to do is download the file before installing the add-on. These files usually are .jar or .xpi files.

1] Download this file to your computer

2] In the menu that is at the top of Firefox window, click on Tools menu and then choose 'Add-ons'. Add-ons window will be displayed

3] To add downloaded add-on to the set of available add-ons, you have to drag and then drop the file into Add-ons window. By doing this, add-on get added to that list.

4] The installation then should start.

Invalid file hash(A possible download corruption): You will get this error message if you have configured Firefox browser not to allow 3rd party cookies. In order to prevent this kind of error, you have to enable 3rd party cookies.
