Content preferences in Firefox
Enable Java: Java is indeed a very popular programming language for the web. An important feature of Java program is that it can easily run on different types of computers. That is why programmers don't have to create any separate version of a Java program for each and every type of computer. For disabling Java applets in this browser, you will have to uncheck this preference.
Fonts and Colors: Default font size: You will find that web pages are displayed in font and size as specified here. But web pages can definitely overide these choices except when you specify otherwise in fonts dialog. Click on Advanced... button for accessing Fonts dialog and for changing fonts preferences.
Fonts dialog: 1] You have to select a language group from 'fonts for' drop down list. For setting default fonts for West European languages/script select 'Western'. If a script or language is not mentioned in the list, select other languages.
2] Choose whether the text should be sans-serif or serif. You can then specify font size that you want for your proportional text.
3] Specify font that you wish to use for Sans-serif, serif and monospace fonts. It is also possible to change the size of Monospace fonts.
If you want, you can also set the minimum font size of the web page. This is indeed very useful as it prevents websites from using very small fonts which are barely readable.
Allow web pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selection above: Firefox uses fonts that are specified by web page author by default. If you want that all websites should use your default font then you have to disable this preference.
Character Encoding: The character encoding preference will allow you to display web pages that don't specify the type of coding to use.
Color Dialog: Text and Background: Using the color dialog box, you can easily change the default background and text color that is seen on web pages. You can select on color samples in order to select colors.
Use System colors: If you want to make use of colors that are defined in your OS settings rather than colors specified above then you must check this preference.
Link colors: It is also possible to change default colors of Web links. You have to select color samples for selecting colors.
Underline Links: Web links are underlined in every web page by default. To disable this, you will have to uncheck the preference. However there are many websites that have their own styling rules. Hence even if you uncheck this preference, it will have no effect on these websites.
Allow web pages to select their own colors, instead of my selections above: The browser by default uses colors specified by web page author. If you disable this preference, it will force all websites to compulsorily use your default color.
File types: Download Actions dialog that you can open by simply clicking Manage.. button has file types that have been downloaded. You can decide what the Firefox browser should do when you click a specific file type simply by choosing the file type that you wish to modify and then clicking 'Change Action' button.
The above action displays 'change action dialog' box that allows you to select the file type that is opened by default application, saved to disk or displayed with a installed plugin. For instance if you view a lot of media files on the web pages then if you want you can specify that Firefox browser should open the media files always by your media player application rather than asking every time where you wish to save the media file.
