A language pack is nothing but a Firefox extension that can be used to change the language which is displayed in Firefox browser. When you change language pack all the preferences, text and the menus that are an integral part of Firefox software application is shown in the language of downloaded language pack.
Installing new language pack: If you are not planning to switch between languages then you should reinstall Firefox browser in the language that you prefer from Firefox download page.
1] Go to Mozilla FTP site
2] Choose version of Firefox browser that you are using. If you want to know the version number of your Firefox browser then you have to select the 'Help' menu from menu bar and then choosing 'About Mozilla Firefox'.
3] Select linux-i686 folder.
4] Choose xpi folder
5] Choose .XPI file for the language pack that you desire. For some languages, you will find multiple regional packs. For instance, Greek language pack is often el.xpi.
After selecting the language packs that you wish to download and if you see a yellow bar at the top of main Firefox window, then it means that download settings are stopping you from downloading language pack. Click on Edit options. In Allowed sites-Add-ons installation dialog, you will have to click on Allow button. Then click on close button and then click .XPI file again.6] Click on 'install now' button
7] To complete installation of language pack, it is necessary to restart Firefox. Hence click on restart Firefox. To see list of languages packs that you have installed, choose Tools menu and then you have to select Add-ons. Then click on 'Languages' tab.
Using Language Pack: After you install language pack, you should enable the pack from within Firefox browser through a preference.
1] In location bar, you need to enter about:config, and then press enter.
2] In preferences list, type general.useragent.locale in Filter text box.
3] Only 1 preference will be displayed. Double click on it.
4] Enter value for language pack that you want to use. This value will be most probably .XPI filename without “.XPI” extension. In the example above, value to type for Greek language pack.
If you often want to switch language packs, you will have to download an extension that includes Locale Switcher to help.
5] To implement changes throughout Firefox, you should restart Firefox.
Sometimes when you are trying to access a particular address, Firefox may give you the error” Firefox does not know how to open this address, because the protocol is not associated to any program”.
What the error really means?
A protocol of any web address is nothing but a text. For instance, web pages are usually http protocols. The error message wants to convey that Firefox as well any other program does not know how to handle this protocol.
Registering the protocol: You should tell Firefox browser which program that it should use to handle that protocol.Firefox browser usually gets protocol information from hidden settings.
1] In location bar, enter about:config and then press enter
2] Right click in the grid, select 'New' and then string
3] In “Enter the preference name” dialog box, type network.protocol-handler.app.myprotocol and then press OK
4] In “Enter string value” prompt, enter the path to program that you want protocol to start. Then press OK.Now that the protocol is registered, again try the link. An external protocol request dialog will appear, you have to click on 'Launch Application'. The program that you have selected should now start. Ensure the path that you have entered is correct.
