Mozilla Crash reporter and issues with Add-ons

In case the Firefox crashes, you need to fill details about the crash in Mozilla crash reporter. This information will be sent to Mozilla developers. You will also observe that some extensions do not work at all with Firefox 3. This is because they are not compatible with Firefox 3.

The Mozilla Crash reporter, commonly referred as Breakpad is a software that can communicate to Firefox developers whenever Firefox crashes. Breakpad sends information about the crash to the Firefox developers. Thus Firefox developers makes changes accordingly in future Firefox versions so that they crash less frequently. Breakpad is now available in Firefox 3. The previous Firefox versions had the quality feedback agent that served the same purpose. Breakpad window immediately comes up when Firefox crashes. It doesn't cause Firefox browser to crash.

When Firefox crashes: After the browser crashes, Mozilla Crash Reporter window appears.

Checkmark the “Tell Mozilla about this crash so they can fix it” checkbox. If this box isn't checked the breakpad will not send any information about the crash to Mozilla.

Details: Clicking on this window will open “report contents” window. Here you can view technical details about the crash

Add comment / comments are visible: You can use this space provided for adding any further information that can help to find the main cause of the browser crash. Comments that you post will be read by anyone.

Include address of web page that was on: When the box is checked, the information sent will also include the website that was visited before the browser crash.

Email me when information is available: In case you want that Mozilla developers should send any follow up information about your crash, you should check the box.

Enter email address here: To receive the follow up information, you should provide your email address so that they can contact you later here.

Quit Firefox: When you click on this button, the dialog box will close down and Firefox will not start again.

Restart Firefox: Start the browser again. Firefox gives you the option to open tabs and windows that you had opened before the crash. In case you crash again after selecting to restore windows then probably the web pages you were on is responsible for causing the crash. That is why you should select “start new session” button.

Viewing Crash reports: From within Firefox, you can view crash reports. For that, you have to perform the following steps:

1] In location bar, you need to type about:crashes and then press enter button. A complete list of links to all your crash reports appears.

2] Click on any link for viewing the report.

Viewing reports that are outside Firefox browser: If you cannot use above method because the browser crashes immediately when it starts then you should view the reports on your pc.

Crash reports are always in .mozilla/firefox/crash reports: Crash reports folder contains 2 subfolder: submitted and pending. Submitted folder will always contain reports that have already been submitted, while the pending folder will contain reports that are not submitted. Each and every file in these 2 subfolders represent 1 report.

It has been found that add-ons are not compatible with Firefox 3. Some themes and extensions have not been updated; hence do not work with Firefox 3. After the browser is upgraded and if some add-ons are not compatible then Firefox disables them.

If you have any of these extensions then you need to contact the author of that add-on. They may have the information and know when the updated add-on might be able.

In case, your add-ons claim that they are compatible with the latest version of Firefox but still there are some compatibility issues then probably, you have not installed the add-ons properly.
