Upgrading to Firefox 3

It is observed that when Firefox is upgraded to Firefox 3, page content, menu text and toolbars appear too large. Following the instructions given below, you can restore them to normal size.

1] In location bar, you need to type about:config and then press the enter button. The about:config warning page might appear. You have to click on “I will be careful, I promise”

2] Now type layout.css.dpi into filter

3] If layout.css.dpi preference has been shown

a] Double click on the preference to edit it.

b] Enter the value as “96” and then press “OK” button.

If layout.css.dpi preference isn't shown then do the following:

1] Right click on any point in the grid, choose “New”, and then choose the integer option from context menu.

2] In “Enter preference name prompt”, you need to type layout.css.dpi and then click on OK button.

3] Now enter the value as “96”

4] Click on OK button.

5] From the menu, which is at the top of Firefox window, you need to select the File option and then choose the Quit menu item. When you restart the browser, you will find that the page content and the toolbars appear normal.

Some common issues in Firefox 2 such as toolbar keeps resetting are also fixed. If you make changes to your toolbar, they do not appear when Firefox is restarted. Even if you change the browser's window size and save it, the modification is still not visible after Firefox is restarted. Sometimes personal bookmarks are visible in Bookmarks manager; however, they are not seen in Bookmark menu. These are serious issues, which are resolved in Firefox 3.

Cause: In case if Firefox is unable to remember toolbar settings then probably a file called localstore.rdf has been corrupted. This file has been maintained by Firefox for managing your local configuration information.

Fixing this problem: If you want to repair this issue, you must delete localstore.rdf file. However, when you restart Firefox, the file is recreated automatically. By using the following methods, this problem can be resolved. No bookmarks are changed or deleted by these methods.

Method 1:

Opening Firefox in Safe mode:

1] First close the Firefox completely: Click on file menu that is at the top of Firefox window and then choose Quit menu item

Type /path/to/firefox/firefox safe mode in the run dialog box

3] Firefox will then start and you will see safe mode dialog box on the browser window.

4] In safe mode dialog box, choose reset toolbars and controls

5] Click on “Make changes and restart”

Another method is to delete localstore.rdf file manually. This method removes copy of localstore.rdf file stored in profile folder. Don't delete localstore.rdf copy from Firefox program installation folder even by mistake.

1] Select file option from the menu that is at the top of Firefox window and then choose quit menu item.

2] Go to profile folder

3] In that profile folder, you should delete localstore.rdf file. Therefore, if you are still using Firefox 2, it is time that you upgrade to Firefox 3.

Another problem with Firefox 2 is that it was using lot of memory space than required. It is caused due to many things including faulty 3rd party applications and memory leaks. Themes and extensions can also cause Firefox browser to significantly use the memory. Open Firefox in safe mode and observe its memory usage to find out whether extensions are significant memory consumers. If you notice an increase in memory usage then you should uninstall or disable these extensions.

Previous versions of plugins can also consume large amount of memory. Hence, make sure that you have installed the recent version of your plugin.
