Issues in Downloading Files and Images

When you select an image or file to download, the download manager of Firefox extracts the data from the location and then stores the information on your machine in the designated folders. If you are facing problems saving or downloading files using Firefox then there are some solutions to resolve this issue.

Clear Download History: Download Manager keeps an accurate record of files and images that have been downloaded by users. As time passes this record grows quite large. You may have to clean up this record.

You can clear download history with the help of clean up button.

1] From the top menu select Tools menu and then choose the downloads menu item.

2] In Download manager click on 'Clean up'.

3] When you click this button the list of items that are downloaded is cleared.

4] Now try downloading the item again.

Clear download history manually: If you are unable to clear download manager record with the above commands then downloads.rdf file in the Firefox profile will be most probably corrupted. For clearing download manager manually, you should delete the downloads.rdf file manually.

2] Open your Firefox profile folder

3] If Profiles folder has multiple folders then you should open the folder containing active profile.

4] In your profile folder locate downloads.rdf file and then delete it.

Configure Firefox browser to not retain your download history:

You can set your Firefox to not to save history of downloads. By doing this future download problems can definitely be prevented. This configuration change can be done by following the steps given below:

1] On your Firefox window, select the edit menu and then click on preferences

2] Select privacy icon

3] In History pane, uncheck the ' Remember what I have downloaded'

4] Click on 'OK' button

Another way of solving this problem is by choosing a completely different download folder. If you don't specify a different location, this browser will download files on your desktop. However, you can configure the download manager to store the downloaded content in any location on your computer.

Download problems may arise due to location currently selected for storing downloads. In case the location where you are going to download the content is not available then Firefox cannot download the item for you.

In some cases the browser loses track of the folder that is going to be used for downloads. This problem can be addressed by choosing a different folder and then again reselecting the original folder. The download location can be configured by doing the following steps:

1] At the top of your Firefox window there is an edit menu. Select it and then choose 'preferences'.

2] Select Main icon

3] In Downloads pane choose 'saves files to'.

4] For selecting a download location, click on 'Browse' button and then navigate your computer for choosing a location to store Firefox downloads.

5] Click on OK

Reset Download Folder: If the above suggestions do not work then you should try and restore the default settings of Mozilla Firefox download folder by using the steps given below:

1] In your location bar, type the term 'about:config” and then press enter. The about:config warning page will appear. Click on “I will be careful, I promise”.

2] Enter browser. download in filter textbox

3] If the preferences given below have 'user set' status then you should reset the value. You can reset the value by right clicking the preferences and then select Reset browser.download.dir, browser.download.folderList

By configuring your computer's internet security software, you can allow the browser to download files. Internet security software such as firewalls are sometimes responsible for blocking certain file downloads. Check the firewall and see whether the firewall has any option to block the download.
