Firefox Compatibility With Windows And Linux
Firefox is a new web browser, which has many features like it protects you from viruses, spyware and pop-ups and it is compatible with all the versions of windows and linux. Firefox gives a better web experience than internet explorer. Firefox requires the following minimum compatibility.
Windows
- Windows 98

Linux
- Linux kernel - 2.2.14 or higher with the following libraries or packages:

- fontconfig (also known as xft)
- libstdc++5
- Firefox has been tested on Linux Fedora Core 4
- Intel Pentium II or AMD K6-III+ 233 MHz CPU (Recommended: 500MHz or greater)
- 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
- 52 MB hard drive space Firefox supports XFT.
Java Can Be installed using firefox on Windows
On Windows, Firefox can be used with Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It cannot be used with the Microsoft Java VM, as that can only be used with Internet Explorer. Versions of Sun's JRE older than 1.3.0_01 will not work. It is possible to install JRE1.4.2 from within Firefox using Xpinstall technology. To get JAVA working you have to install firefox with unofficial installer, then install Java using XPInstall technology. If you have already downloaded Firefox as a ZIP file, you can add the registry information that JRE 1.4.2 and later require by hand. To do this, save this registry file to your desktop, and double-click to import it. If you are asked if you want to add the information to the Windows registry, click yes. After this is done, you can install JRE 1.4.2 if required, then restart Firefox and use Java. If neither of the above solutions works, you can use JRE1.4.1.05until the issue you are having is resolved. JRE 1.4.1_05 does not require the information in the Windows registry that JRE 1.4.2 does.
Linux
On Linux, Firefox requires1.4.2or later. Firefox is compiled with gcc 3.2.3, so a compatible version of the Java plugin must be used. JRE 1.4.2 contains a compatible plugin.
Use Windows XP styled menus
If you are running Windows XP and want your menus to fit in with the default (Luna) style firefox supports the facility. Firefox also supports the Windows Classic (9x/Me/2000) styled menus. In addition to changing themes, you can personalize Firefox even more by using your own toolbar background image.
Installation on Windows for Firefox is very compatible
- Double click the Firefox Setup 1.5.0.1.exe installer to start the install.
- Installation on Linux for Firefox
- Extract the tarball in the directory where you want to install Firefox:
- tar -xzvf firefox-1.5.0.1.tar.gz
- This will create a firefox subdirectory of that directory
Common Issues In Windows With Firefox
- When installing as a restricted-access user on a shared machine into a location that you can write to, there may still be negative side effects (default browser/other keys not being set correctly). The browser should still function however. When installing as a restricted access user do not attempt to install over an installation in a restricted-access/shared location as this may destroy that installation.
- Firefox 1.5.0.1 may hang when closing after viewing a PDF file in some older versions of the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug in. If you experience this, make sure you are using the newest versionof the plug in.
Common Issues In Linux With Firefox
- If Firefox 1.5.0.1 is installed to a location with spaces in the path, it may not be able to set itself as default browser and may keep prompting at startup. The work around is to install into a path without spaces.
- GNOME integration does not work properly with Fedora Core 3. Users of Fedora Core 3 will need to download and instal linc1.0.3-3.i386rpm.RPM, perform the following command in the directory you installed Firefox 1.5.0.1 into (you will need write permission): The next time you start Firefox 1.5.0.1, GNOME integration should be functional.
- firefox -remote (mozilla-xremote-client) no longer works on urls containing commas, and is deprecated. firefox -new-window /url/ will open the url in a new window; firefox -new-tab /url/ will open the url in a new tab.
