Why Firefox is unnecessary consuming my computer’s CPU resources

At times, Firefox may take your significant resources to process, download, and then display web content. In case if you are experiencing frequent periods of CPU usage when using Firefox then there are various options that you can use to solve your problem.

The central processing unit often referred as CPU is the brain of your computer. When your CPU is used heavily, overall performance of your computer can be drastically affected. Depending on your OS, you can review as well as monitor CPU usage using specific tools.

On specific web pages: If there is high CPU usage occurring when you are visiting specific websites then the areas mentioned below should be reviewed for identifying the common problem.

Plug-in

Flash: There are sites such as YouTube that require a plug-in commonly referred as Flash. Flash plug-in is often used for displaying video or animated content inside web browser window. The Flash plug-in is regularly updated and there are some websites that require the use of recent version of plug-in.

1] Download and then install the recent version of Flash plug-in

2] A Firefox add-on (Flashblock) will allow you to selectively disable and enable Flash content on sites.

Adobe Reader: The Adobe Reader plug-in allows you to display PDF documents inside Firefox browser. This plug-in is browser component of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, a tool that is used to review and then print PDF documents. Adobe Reader is a widely used program for printing PDF documents. PDF format is widely used for publishing documents. This format is suitable for use on World Wide Web. When you install Adobe reader on your machine, you can directly review PDF documents through web browser. So if you are not sure whether your browser will be able to download PDF files then you should think of installing Adobe reader. In case if the problem is occurring whenever you are accessing PDF documents then do the following:

1] Try to update your Adobe reader.

2] In order to reduce consumption of CPU resources, you will have to configure your Firefox so that it opens all its PDF documents outside Firefox.

JavaScript: It is a very useful scripting language, which is included in almost all web pages for enhancing the experience with sounds, menus and other features. In a website, where JavaScript is used extensively, Firefox may need significant CPU usage. In such cases, you should install NoScript, which is a Firefox add-on. This add-on will allow you to selectively enable and disable JavaScript on sites. It is also possible for you to selectively disable and enable kinds of JavaScript actions that may affect performance.

Report the website: If you are unable to find out the cause of your problem, with a particular site, you should report the website to Firefox development team. They will review the site to find out if there are any specific issues in Firefox browser that have not been addressed.

To report a site, click on help menu that is at the top of Firefox window and then choose 'Report broken website'. You don't have to submit any personal information to give a report of broken website. When you report issues with specific sites, it will help the Firefox team to improve.

Extensions: Extensions for Firefox have been developed by a community of individuals. CPU usage problems, sometimes because of varying development standards, insufficient support for recent versions of Mozilla Firefox and incompatibility between extensions are some of them.

Hardware acceleration: Disabling bitmap and cursor hardware acceleration on drivers and video cards can definitely reduce CPU usage when displaying the images.
