Smart location bar in Firefox

Smart location bar an auto complete drop down menu. As time goes on, it will adapt to your preferences and offer much better matches. The more frequently you visit a site, the browser get a better idea about the sites you visit.

Location bar can be still used for:

Smart keyword search: By typing the keyword search term

Location bar search: By typing the search term into location bar

Overview: If you type, any text into location bar and the autocomplete drop down shows matching sites from the browsing history. The drop down menu will also display the websites that you have tagged and bookmarked. Matched terms are always highlighted, making list of results very easy to scan.

For instance, if you type “aw” into location bar, it will bring a list of bookmarked and visited web pages for awesome and away.

Using autocomplete list: Click on location bar in order to focus it. Begin entering a web address. tag name, page title into location bar. Firefox browser will try to guess now where you wish to go and autocomplete list is then displayed.

Press down arrow on keyboard for highlighting the 1st entry in autocomplete list. You can press down or up for scrolling through autocomplete list. Now press enter and you will go to selected web page. If you want, you can also make use of the mouse pointer and click on the item for loading the selected web page.

The part of your entry that will match what you have typed will definitely be displayed in bold. The smart location bar will then show the results for:

1] Page titles from the history window that will match of what you have entered.

2] Web addresses from the pages in history window that will match of what you have entered

3] Bookmark titles that will match of what you have entered

4] Bookmarks with the tag names that will match of what you have entered.

Location bar will always look for results across the word boundaries. More letters you type, narrower the results displayed. For instance, if you enter sm, it will match web pages that contain both s and m. They don't need to be together.

Tips: Whenever you want to visit a website that you have already visited, you have to just enter a few letters of that page title or web address. You can scroll through autocomplete entries and locate the web page in the list. If it’s not displayed in the list then type another letter. Now press enter and you will go to selected web address. The browser gives this entry combination a higher weighage in future.

There is no need to clear your browsing history. The richest source of the autocomplete entries is but from title address combination. If you clear the browsing history, it will remove all these entries from results.

Bookmark and tag used web pages frequently. The location bar matches on the name that you have given to your bookmark.

How to remove autocomplete results: For removing an entry from autocomplete list, do the following:

1] Select entry in location bar using the mouse pointer or the arrow

2] Now press delete option for removing the item from autocomplete list. For removing all history results from autocomplete list, you have to delete the Firefox's Browsing history.

Note that autocomplete items from the bookmarks cannot be deleted from results if you try to clear them or delete the browsing history. These items have star. For deleting these items, you have to delete associated bookmark.
